Folks love to harp on bias at the input level, but if your tool is outputting crappy decisions that you wouldn’t be willing to stand behind in a 1-on-1 meeting, scrap it. In my world, I treat the AI as a coach, not a final decision maker. You still need an actual human to put the gut check on the decisions being made when folks are involved. I’d rather over-validate a false positive than find myself in the position of having to defend a black box algorithm.
Privacy, I never assume consent, just get really, really clear. Like spell it out in crayon level clear. If your thing tracks 100 datapoints, state explicitly which 5 those are and why you care. Overcommunicate, even if it’s ugly. Folks would rather be overburdened than blindsided. Same for fairness, because if your tool misses 3% of the time that’s cool, but tell me what 3% of the population it’s missing and where in the system it lives. If it’s always in that same corner of the system, now we got a problem flag.

I believe that the ethics of AI starts not with technology, but with the humans that create and utilize it. You can’t out-algorithm character, after all. I also think it’s easier to implement ethical practices in small companies, just due to the headcount and the smaller degree of management to obfuscate decision making.
In terms of bias/fairness questions, sometimes all you need is a gut check: “Would I want this applied to me?” If the answer’s no, it’s a red flag. Throw the code away; examine the intent.
In my experience, the biggest issue isn’t faulty data sets, but rather lazy thinking. Tools get to be scapegoats for things people were too busy to notice. Ethics is not a checkbox post-deployment; it’s a process you start on day 1. Which means cutting the corners that “work 99% of the time” and speaking up when something feels wrong, even if it’s “easier” to ignore it.
I have no doubt it’s a tougher sell in larger orgs with people eager to “just ship it.” For smaller teams, however, ethical AI really does just come down to principle and common sense.
To be fair, no system is going to be perfect, but I think that if we put principles first, the long-term path will stay cleaner. Innovation races ahead, but accountability needs to be the one in front.
